12.1 Look at the picture below and discuss the use of a diary.

Jahid : There are several reasons behind my using a diary. By using a diary, I keep record of what I did and what I am going to do. It helps me do my work timely. It also prevents myself from forgetting my work. That’s why I use a diary. Why do you use a diary?
Saimon : I use diary for the same reason you have. I also use diary for self-analysis.
Jahid : Okay, friend. I have to go now. See you later. Bye.

12.2 Discuss the following questions in pairs and write down the answers in a complete sentence. Then, underline all the verbs and say which verb refers to what time (Present, past, or future):

12.3 Read the story
Hi, I’m Medha. Today, I found one of my notebooks I used for writing when I was in class one. But the funny part is, I can’t even understand what I wrote. At that time, I was learning to write. I couldn’t hold the pencil correctly. MEDHA’S DREAM
I couldn’t even draw a straight line. It reminded me of my childhood. I just loved to make doodles on my notebook and the wall of my room at that time. MEDHA’S DREAM
My parents and teacher worked hard to teach me handwriting. I did exercise a lot to improve my writing. My handwriting became good after a few years of practice. MEDHA’S DREAM

Now I am in class six. My handwriting is much better now. But my drawing skill is not good enough. But I learned from my childhood that, if I practise, I can improve anything. Now I’m practicing drawing a lot.
My drawing teacher encourages me to draw more. My drawing skill is becoming better day by day. I want to become an artist.
When I will become a painter, I will decorate my room with my painting. I am also fond of doing sketches. I will draw a picture of my parents and hang that in my room. I will also draw pictures of my favorite teachers and present these to them.
But I’m not good at sketching people. I am sure that my sketching skill will improve if I keep practicing. When I will be good enough at sketching, MEDHA’S DREAM I will fulfill my wishes. I also love to draw pictures of nature. Today, the sky is cloudy. It may rain today. If I can capture the scene in my drawing, it will be interesting.
Note: Tense refers to the time when an action takes place. Ac- cording to time, there are three main tenses. The Present Tense refers to an action in the present and a habit- ual, or extremely true action. The Past Tense refers to an action in the past. 12.6 Read the story again and in pairs, pick any 10 sentences and write their structures.

After returning from school he takes some snacks and goes to play with his friends in the field. He sits for study at 7.00 pm. He prepares his homework for the next day. At 9.30 pm, he takes his dinner and watches TV for some time. Then at 10.30 pm, he goes to sleep.
Situation 2 : My Dream
I am Ratul. I lived in a small village in Munshiganj. From my childhood, I had a dream to study in a Public University. To fulfill my dream, I had to work hard. After my SSC, I got admission in a govt. college in our locality. To get GPA-5, 1 studied a lot.
After my HSC Exam, I got admission in a coaching centre. I studied a BOOK lot. I didn’t think about anything other than getting admission in a Public University. I intended to get admission in Dhaka University although I appeared in a few university admission tests. The good news is that now I am a student of Dhaka University in English Department.
Situation 3: How to Follow Direction
I am Laila. I am the captain of my class. My class teacher has asked me to arrange a class party. I have made a plan. It is as follows.
First I will make a committee. I will be the leader of the committee. Then I will discuss with the committee members about the theme of the class party. After fixing the theme, we will discuss about food, games and other activities.
I will distribute works among the committee members. I will supervise the whole process and I will help him/her who needs help. After finishing all the works, I will talk to my teacher that we have done the job. Finally, I will request my teacher to check for deficiencies in the arrangement.
12.10 Read the following situations and add some sentences using proper tenses:

Instructions: Make a big circle. Count 1,2 & 3- 1,2 & 3…. Student 1 will tell a sentence in the present tense. The student who will make mistakes in tenses will be out of the game and the student who will be in the the end will be the winner.
